How to get a clean white-background product photo (for Amazon, Etsy, or Shopify) — without Photoshop
Most marketplaces require a plain white (or transparent) background for the main listing photo. Here's how to get there, from free/DIY options up to when it's worth paying someone.
1. Free and cheap tools that work fine for simple photos
- remove.bg — free tier at reduced resolution, one-click background removal; good for a quick test or a low-volume shop.
- Canva's Background Remover — free with a Canva account, easy for one-off edits and simple product shapes.
- GIMP (free, open source) — more manual control (Select by Color, magic wand), works well if the background is already a solid, contrasting color.
If your product has clean, simple edges — a box, a bottle, most hard-surface goods — one of these free tools will usually get you a marketplace-ready image in a couple of minutes per photo.
2. Where free tools start struggling
- Fine or wispy edges — fur, hair, fabric fringe, feathers — automated cutout tools frequently leave a visible halo or eat into the edge.
- Transparent or reflective products — glass, jewelry, clear plastic — the background often shows through unevenly.
- Volume — free tiers are usually rate-limited or watermarked; doing 30–75 photos one at a time by hand adds up fast.
- Consistency — batches processed across different tools/sessions can end up with slightly different white points or edge treatment, which looks inconsistent in a storefront grid.
3. When it's worth outsourcing
If you have a real batch to get through, want consistent results across the whole set, or your product photos have the harder edge cases above, Engineer Tsai Studio's product photo background removal service delivers a transparent PNG and a clean white-background JPEG for each photo, same day, flagging anything with an ambiguous edge for your review instead of silently guessing. Starter tier is $5 for up to 5 photos.
