Free Survey Codebook Starter Library (JSON + CSV)
5 ready-to-use codebook templates for the most common open-end survey question types — free, no email required, no catch.
What's inside
- 5 codebooks — subscription cancellation/churn, NPS follow-up ("why that score"), general product feedback, event/conference feedback, and employee exit/engagement.
- 6–8 categories per codebook, each with a code number, category name, and real typical keyword/phrase signals a coder (human or AI) would look for.
- Two formats —
codebooks.json(structured, tool/API-ready) andcodebooks.csv(flat, spreadsheet-ready), identical data.
What this is not
- Not a substitute for a client-specific codebook. Every real market-research project needs its own codebook built around its own question wording and business context — this library is a starting point to adapt, not a drop-in replacement.
- Not exhaustive. 5 common survey shapes, not every possible open-end question a researcher might field.
When this is enough on its own
If you're coding a small batch of responses by hand against one of these common question types, adapting one of these codebooks yourself is fine — that's exactly what it's for.
When it isn't
Coding hundreds of open-end responses against your own codebook — especially with a strict abstain discipline so ambiguous responses get flagged instead of force-fit — is tedious and error-prone by hand at volume. That's the exact job Engineer Tsai Studio's survey verbatim coding service does: send your codebook and responses, get back every response coded or flagged ABSTAIN with a reason, no forced guesses.
Other Engineer Tsai Studio services: PDF tables to Excel, product image background removal, Chart of Accounts starter pack. Questions: hello@tsaielectro.com.
